Beating the Heat Naturally

Hot flashes (hot flushes) are one of the most common symptoms of menopause. They occur in 40 percent of regularly menstruating women in their forties and in more than 80 percent of all postmenopausal women.
What causes hot flashes?Hot flashes are caused by the hormone fluctuations in menopause. They often begin a year or two before woman’s last periods. For most women, hot flashes fade gradually within a few years.
What are hot flashes? If you have hot flashes, you may experience:
  • a sudden feeling of warmth over the face, neck and chest
  • flushing
  • perspiration
  • rapid or irregular heart beat
  • cold chills
The duration and frequency of hot flashes varies from woman to woman. They usually last from 30 seconds to several minutes.
To prevent hot flashes, avoid some triggers: heat, caffeine, alcohol, spicy food, smoking, tight clothing, stress.
Is hormone replacement therapy safe?Hormone replacement therapy was the most popular way to treat menopausal symptoms. However, it has some dangerous side effects.
A large study conducted by the Women’s Health Initiative of the National Institute of Health showed that women receiving combined hormone therapy with both estrogen and progesterone had an increased risk for breast cancer, heart attack and stroke when compared with women who did not receive hormone therapy.
Estrogen therapy alone is associated with an increased risk of developing cancer of the lining of the uterus in postmenopausal women.
What is the homeopathic treatment for hot flashes?Homeopathic medicines can reduce the frequency and severity of hot flashes and significantly improve women’s quality of life. Homeopathy is a safe and healthy alternative to traditional hormone replacement therapy. Homeopathic medicines stimulate the natural hormone balance without any side effects.
In 2008 a multi-center observational study was published in "Homeopathy" (Volume 97, Issue 1, January 2008) by researchers MF Bordet, MD, et al. I had the pleasure to participate in this study in which 99 physicians from 8 countries took part. It included 438 women with an average age of 55. Homeopathic medicines were prescribed to all patients. This observational study revealed a significant reduction (p greater than 0.001) in the frequency of hot flushes and a significant reduction in the daily discomfort they caused (p less than 0.001). 90 percent of the women reported decreasing or disappearance of their symptoms. These changes took place within 15 days after they started the homeopathic treatment. Lachesis mutus, Belladonna, Sepia, Sulphur and Sanguinaria canadensis were the the most commonly prescribed medicines in the study.
Homeopathic medicines for hot flashesThe most commonly used homeopathic medicines for hot flashes include:
  • Amylium nitrosum - intense hot flashes with profuse sweating, anxiety and palpitations; a chilled feeling as the hot flash subsides.
  • Belladonna - a sudden sensation of heat accompanied by a flushed, hot, sweaty face. Rapid heart beat.
  • Glonoinum - sudden rush of blood to the head, red and hot face with visible throbbing of the blood vessels of the neck.
  • Folliculinum - hot flashes with flushing and night sweats; headaches; palpitations.
  • Lachesis - very frequent hot flashes with a sensation of heat starting from the chest and rising upward, red blotchy face and neck; palpitations and throbbing headache.
  • Sanguinaria canadensis - hot flashes with bright red, burning cheeks and ears. Burning of palms and soles may also be present.
  • Sepia - Hot flashes on pale face, starting from abdomen that spread upward to the neck and face with profuse sweating.

Alcoholism reduced by homeopathy

An Indian pilot study looked at which remedies were the most effective for alcoholism – and Nux vomica came out on top.
The other secondary remedies listed, all prescribed according to the symptoms of the participants, corresponded to those frequently seen in homoeopathic clinics.
Throughout the study, 67.5 % of participants were classified as “cured” as a result of treatment.
Of the remedies used, Nux vomica was effective in 70% cases while Stramonium, Quracus spiritus, Syphilinum, Opium, Medorrhinum, Hepar suphuris, Mercurius solubilis, Sepia, Staphisagria, Arsenicum album, Carcinosin, Agaricus muscarius, and Tuberculinum were effective in 2% of individual cases each (total 26%).
6.5 % of cases were unhelped by the remedies chosen.
Note: While Nux vomica emerged as the lead remedy, it only helps when it matches the symptom complex of the personal struggling with alcohol, hence the reason other remedies were also used. Treatment from a qualified homoeopath allows the best remedy, best potency, and best frequency of dose to be prescribed for the individual.

Withdrawing From drugs and alcohol with homeopathy

Homeopathy is a wonderful support for those withdrawing from drug or alcohol addiction. Not only does it relieve the immediate symptoms, it also works to heal the underlying cause, whether inherited, acquired, emotional or psychological.
Does that mean homeopathy is the only therapy that will help or that withdrawal becomes completely trouble-free? Not at all, but the process becomes so much easier with homeopathy.
Maura Henninger agrees. In her Huffington Post article on holistic treatments for withdrawal symptoms she says:
“Homeopathy is also incredibly effective for supporting patients in the early stages of recovery. By its nature non-toxic, homeopathy stimulates a person’s bodily systems to deal with stress and illness more efficiently. Research is currently being undertaken to understand how and why these remedies work on the mental and physical level. Specific homeopathic remedies may be helpful during the period of withdrawal from alcohol or drugs. Remedies are chosen on a highly-individualized basis. But there are a few main remedies that help the addict going through withdrawal, including Arsenicum album, Nux vomica and Lachesis.”
Keep in mind that there are more than just three remedies that can be used. Maura’s article also provides other helpful advice in managing the symptoms of withdrawal.

Cystitis. Why Homeopathic treatment is best

This blog first published on "Why Homeopathy?" website

Cystitis is inflammation of the bladder, usually caused by a bladder infection. The condition is often referred to as a ‘urinary tract infection’ or UTI. NHS Choices says it can be caused by not emptying your bladder properly, for example, because of pregnancy or an enlarged prostate, damage or irritation around the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body), bacteria being transferred from the anus to the urethra, for example, during sex.

The symptoms of cystitis are well known:
  •     an urgent and frequent need to urinate
  •     pain or stinging when urinating
  •     pain in the bladder
CONVENTIONAL MEDICAL TREATMENT

NHS Choices says that the symptoms of mild cystitis “usually clear up without treatment within a few days”. It offers several ‘self-help’ treatments, such as:
  • painkillers like Paracetamol and Ibuprofen, which “can reduce pain and discomfort” but then tells you to read the information leaflet because of the dangers of doing so!
  • drinking plenty of water is often recommended as a treatment for cystitis
  • avoiding alcohol.
  • refrain from having sex.
  • using ‘urine alkanising agents’, such as sodium bicarbonate or potassium citrate, for a short period to relieve pain when urinating.
However, NHS Choices warns that “there is currently a lack of clinical evidence for their effectiveness”.

When the symptoms of Cystitis become more severe, or when it recurs regularly, Antibiotic drugs are then prescribed, with all their inherent dangers.

Important Note
Homeopathy does not treat illness or diseases. It treats the individual who has been diagnosed with a particular illness or disease. The distinction is important, and if you wish to read more about this, click on the chapter “Illness Diagnosis” above.

In acute cases of bladder infection, the following homeopathic remedies are the most commonly used and effective:

Aconite
Useful at the beginning of a bladder infection, when the symptoms come on very suddenly.

Cantharis
Perhaps the best known remedy for bladder infections. People needing this remedy have burning, scalding pains during urination, with a constant, frequent, often overwhelming urge to urinate, but only able to pass it drop by drop.

Apis Mel
Severe, hot burning pains, especially when passing urine. Urge to pass urine frequently to prevent leakage.  Often used when Cantharis is indicated but does not help.

Sarsaparilla
Severe pain during and at the end of urination; can urinate only in dribbles. Often a crusty urinary sediment.

Nux Vomica
Symptoms come on after over-indulgence, drugs or alcohol. There is pain before or during urination.

Lycopodium
Flow is slow to start; may be back pain before urination which goes away afterwards; may need to pass urine during night

Nux Vom
For cutting, burning pains, where little urine is passed and you feel chilly and irritable

Pulsatilla
Passes urine frequently, symptoms worse when lying down. Involuntary passing of urine  mainly at night, when coughing, passing wind.  Burning sensation during or after urination

Staphysagria
For cystitis after intercourse.

Many of these remedies can be found in simple home-use remedy kits that can be obtained from these Homeopathic Pharmacies.

Q. What Can Homeopathy Treat?

5/4/2016

A. People often ask if homoeopathy makes a difference for asthma, diabetes, ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, emphysema, glaucoma, Parkinson’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis… or any one of a hundred other diseases. The answer is both yes… and no.Homeopathy works best when given for the symptom complex of an individual, not for a diagnosis given to many.
This is because we don’t just suffer from isolated and disconnected diseases – everything about our health is interconnected. For example, a problem with our heart may be affected by anxiety which is then related to a skin problem or even a  stomach disorder.
In this illustration, the homeopath would not see the possible heart failure, eczema, gastric ulcer, and panic attacks as complaints to be managed separately but parts of a larger dis-ease represented by it’s combined symptom complex – and a matching homeopathic remedy would be chosen for the idiosyncratic symptoms of this complex.
When the full extent of the body’s dis-ease is reflected back to it in this way, a healing response is triggered in which many symptoms resolve at the same time; while the remedy is the stimuli, the body’s response to it creates the healing.
