The Magnificent 7 Homeopathic remedies for childbirth!
A number of expectant Mums have contacted me recently asking about homeopathic remedies for childbirth. So this week I thought I would reproduce (no pun intended!) an article I previously wrote about the best remedies to help in this wonderful experience.
Having a medical background myself, I am a great believer in working with the medical system. I am finding that more and more hospitals, nurses, doctors and consultants are supportive of their patients' wishes in using complementary medicine to help the overall experience of childbirth to be a positive one. So here are seven of the best homeopathic remedies to help in childbirth. You should be able to get the remedies from your local homeopath or health store. I suggest using a 200 potency as extra strength is needed to match the high energy of childbirth. Unless otherwise indicated, take one tablet am and pm for 2 days, take a break for 5 days, and repeat weekly if needed.
ARNICA: a must for every household! Helps to treat bruising, stems bleeding and aids healing. Give am and pm x 7 days, take a break for 7 days, and repeat x 3 weeks if needed.
ACONITE: great to help you relax into labour, establish deep breathing and alleviate fear. Also excellent if contractions stop due to fright – if this happens, give every 15 minutes until they restart.
BELLIS PERENNIS: helps to restore all organs to their proper places, aids internal healing and is good for treating bruising, especially in cases of forceps, episiostomy or caesarean.
CALENDULA: aids healing of all tissues, especially wounds or sutures involved.
CAULOPHYLLUM: give when labour is underway. It helps to dilate the cervix and eases the birth process (the waters may or may not have broken). Repeat this remedy every 30 minutes if required.
HYPERICUM: aids healing of wounds and back ache after an epidural.
PULSATILLA: if contractions stop and start and your baby can't make up its mind, give one hourly until a response (either things will go ahead, or the contractions will stop). Also take if you are weepy after all the effort and you feel helpless and needy.
Please note that all homeopathic remedies can be safely taken alongside orthodox medicine. For me, this is exactly what complementary medicine is all about: the two disciplines working side by side for the benefit of the patient. If you can, do not administer the two together, as homeopathic medicine is energy-based, and chemical-based medicine may neutralise its effect. So take 15 minutes apart and enjoy the experience.
There are also many useful remedies for newborns too: I've used homeopathy to great effect to treat conditions like colic, not sleeping well, nappy rash, not keeping milk down and so on.
