Homeopathy Plus Article. Bach Flower Essences

People sometimes wonder if Bach flowers and homeopathy are similar. The answer is both yes and no. To understand the two systems a little better, this article will discuss the following:
  • Bach flowers and Homeopathy – What’s the Difference?
  • Who was Dr Edward Bach?
  • The 38 Bach Flowers: Their Discovery and Development
  • Edward Bach’s Death
  • How Bach Flower Remedies are Taken
  • Emotions Helped by Bach Flower Remedies
Bach Flowers and Homeopathy – What’s the Difference?Like homeopathy, Bach flower remedies use drop doses, are virtually tasteless, rely on the ‘essence’ of plants for their gentle healing effects, ease mental-emotional difficulties, and do this without harmful side-effects.
But there are differences.
While Bach flowers hope to treat physical problems by relieving the mental-emotional symptoms that surround and perhaps cause them, homoeopathy acts at a deeper level to treat both at the same time.
Homoeopathy also works by a specific ‘like treats like’, or Law of Similars approach.
In contrast, the principle that underpins Bach flowers is still unknown and the way they create changes in mood and emotions, unclear.
While the beneficial effect of Bach flowers may come from the homeopathic ‘like treats like’ effect or from just a simple palliation or suppression of symptoms, without a proving there is no way of knowing.
Who was Dr Edward Bach?Dr Edward Bach was born in England in 1886.
As a young man he seriously considered entering the ministry. Fortunately for Bach flower users he decided upon a career in medicine instead.
Bach commenced his training at the University College Hospital and while there held the positions of Casualty Medical Officer and House Surgeon.
He also worked at the National Temperance Hospital and practiced from rooms at prestigious Harley Street.
In 1919, Bach commenced work at the London Homoeopathic Hospital where he was highly influenced by homeopathy and the teachings of its founder, Samuel Hahnemann.
During this period he also worked on vaccines and was jointly responsible for the development of a group of remedies prepared from bowel bacteria, called the bowel nosodes.
These nosodes are still in use today.
In 1930, dissatisfied with medicine’s focus on the disease rather than the patient, Bach left a successful medical practice to explore a more humane way of treatment.
Over the course of several years he perfected a natural system of medicine that relied on 38 different flower essences from plants and trees of the surrounding countryside.
These came to be known as the Bach flower remedies.
The 38 Bach Flowers: Discovery and DevelopmentFrom Bach’s experiences in medical practice, he had come to the conclusion that most physical illness was caused by negative emotions, and that if unbalanced emotions were corrected, physical health would return.
Along with being a researcher, Bach was also a highly sensitive and naturally intuitive individual. He found that by holding his hand over certain plants his own negative emotions would resolve.
After identifying which plants resolved which emotions he began to prepare them as remedies.
Originally he collected the dew off the petals and mixed them with an equal amount of alcohol to make the tincture.
He soon found impossible to collect enough this way to treat his patients so he progressed to suspending the flowers in jars of spring water and leaving them in the sunlight for several hours.
For woodier plants, buds and sprigs were boiled in water to collect their essence.
All three of these approaches produced a mother tincture that could then be further diluted to make the Bach flower remedy.
Edward Bach’s DeathDr Bach died from cancer at 50 years of age on the evening of November 27th, 1936.
While his death was early and untimely it must be kept in mind that nineteen years earlier he had been given only 3 months to live. Bach attributed in his prolonged survival in part to the Bach flowers with which he worked.
Fortunately for us his collection of remedies was complete by the time of his death and they are now known and used around the world.
How are Bach Flower Remedies Taken?Bach flower remedies are easy to prepare and easy to use.
They are sold in dropper bottles and can be dispensed as drops straight from the bottle or as sips once the drops are diluted further in a cup or bottle of water.
The resulting liquid is almost tasteless though the stock bottle does contain alcohol used as a preservative.
Bach flowers can be taken as individual remedies or in combinations or blends. For a printable pdf list of the Bach Flower remedies and the emotions they treat, please click here.
Bach flower remedies doses may be added to food and drinks or placed directly into the mouth.
They are non-addictive, will not interact with other medications, and do not have any side-effects. They can be safely used by humans, animals and even plants.
Emotions Helped by Bach Flower RemediesThe 38 Bach flower essences treat a variety of mental-emotional states, e.g. Scleranthus for indecision, Olive for mental exhaustion, Beech for intolerance and critical mindsets, Holly for extreme jealousy, and Larch for feelings of inferiority.
Of all the Bach flower remedies, Rescue Remedy is perhaps the best known. It is a combination of five Bach flowers that help during emergency situations or times of stress, such as anticipating an upcoming exam, a job interview, after an accident, or during a panic attack.

National Center for Homeopathy Article - Heartburn  and Homeopathy

Homeopathy for Heartburn
For some, heartburn is experienced only occasionally, but others suffer from it all too often. If you suffer from heartburn or acid reflux regularly, then it’s probably time to focus on prevention by keeping a food log, identifying your heartburn triggers, and reducing the appearance of these triggers in your diet, if not avoiding them all together. Luckily, homeopathy offers a selection of remedies for the treatment of heartburn and acute acid reflux symptoms:
  • Nux vomica: One of the primary remedies for digestive complaints is Nux vomica. The individual may complain of stomach pains of all types including burning, bloating, aching, constipation, nausea, belching, and the feeling of stomach digest and acid backing up into the throat. One characteristic of the sufferer which helps determine this remedy, is a brusque temperament—similar to that of the overworked, high-powered businessman/woman who is very intense. The sufferer may be bossy and easy to anger and often eats and drinks alcohol in excess. This individual desires coffee, spicy food, fatty foods, and other stimulants. The person in need of Nux vomica is inclined to overdo everything—and all these overabundances contribute to heart burn and acid reflux
  • Carbo vegetabilis: The individual needing Carbo vegetabilis has heartburn characterized by belching, bloating, heaviness in the stomach and chest and distress from eating simple, plain foods. Bitter, sour, rancid burping, along with nausea and a very bloated abdomen are typical; burping gives temporary relief. Individuals in need of Carbo vegetabilis feel worse after rich, high-fat food and crave fresh air. Feeling physically exhausted and mentally sluggish are also common, but lying down makes the indigestion worse. Hands and feet will likely be cold.
  • Arsenicum album: The individual in need of Arsenicum album may complain of burning pains felt in the stomach and food backing up into the esophagus, accompanied by burning pains all the way up to the throat. There may be severe, watery, burning, yellow diarrhea. Many of the symptoms will subside while drinking hot drinks like tea or by applying heat, such as through use of a heating pad. Sufferers needed Arsenicum album will be thirsty for frequent sips of cold water and their mental state may be anxious, restless, and fearful of being left alone.
  • Phosphorus: The individual needing Phosphorus for heartburn will complain about burning pains felt in the abdomen, bloating, and a feeling of fullness accompanied by great thirst for icy cold drinks—which are vomited back up shortly after becoming warm in the stomach. Belching and vomiting of undigested food are also characteristic of the person needing Phosphorus. The person is mild-mannered and seeks company and affection.
  • Pulsatilla: The person in need of Pulsatilla complains that their stomach feels empty or that there is a sensation of a hole being burned in their stomach. There is often gurgling and rumbling, as well as flatulence. The heartburn comes on at different times of the day and after eating various kinds of foods (especially rich, greasy ones). Fresh air helps. The sufferer's temperament is sweet, gentle, whiny and tearful. He or she is afraid of being alone and desires sympathy. Individuals may have cravings for ice cream, fatty foods, and pastries, which make them feel worse and aggravate the reflux.

From Integrative Practitioner Online
Patricia Herman, MS, ND, PhD
Two New Licensed Integrative Health Professionals Join NIH Council: Herman and Price
One of the policy issues at the NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health is whether the Center meets its statutory obligation for the Advisory Council to consist of 50% plus of licensed integrative health practitioners. Two recent top-notch appointments - RAND economist Patricia Herman, ND, PhD and University of Washington massage practitioner and researcher Cynthia Price, PhD, LMP - put the numbers at 3/18. Neither, notably, is from a college or university from the licensed complementary and integrative health world. Does this side-lining fosters interprofessionalism and research engagement from these professions?

The Magnificent 7 Homeopathic remedies for childbirth!

A number of expectant Mums have contacted me recently asking about homeopathic remedies for childbirth. So this week I thought I would reproduce (no pun intended!) an article I previously wrote about the best remedies to help in this wonderful experience.
Having a medical background myself, I am a great believer in working with the medical system. I am finding that more and more hospitals, nurses, doctors and consultants are supportive of their patients' wishes in using complementary medicine to help the overall experience of childbirth to be a positive one. So here are seven of the best homeopathic remedies to help in childbirth. You should be able to get the remedies from your local homeopath or health store. I suggest using a 200 potency as extra strength is needed to match the high energy of childbirth. Unless otherwise indicated, take one tablet am and pm for 2 days, take a break for 5 days, and repeat weekly if needed.
ARNICA: a must for every household! Helps to treat bruising, stems bleeding and aids healing. Give am and pm x 7 days, take a break for 7 days, and repeat x 3 weeks if needed.
ACONITE: great to help you relax into labour, establish deep breathing and alleviate fear. Also excellent if contractions stop due to fright – if this happens, give every 15 minutes until they restart.
BELLIS PERENNIS: helps to restore all organs to their proper places, aids internal healing and is good for treating bruising, especially in cases of forceps, episiostomy or caesarean.
CALENDULA: aids healing of all tissues, especially wounds or sutures involved.
CAULOPHYLLUM: give when labour is underway. It helps to dilate the cervix and eases the birth process (the waters may or may not have broken). Repeat this remedy every 30 minutes if required.
HYPERICUM: aids healing of wounds and back ache after an epidural.
PULSATILLA: if contractions stop and start and your baby can't make up its mind, give one hourly until a response (either things will go ahead, or the contractions will stop). Also take if you are weepy after all the effort and you feel helpless and needy.
Please note that all homeopathic remedies can be safely taken alongside orthodox medicine. For me, this is exactly what complementary medicine is all about: the two disciplines working side by side for the benefit of the patient. If you can, do not administer the two together, as homeopathic medicine is energy-based, and chemical-based medicine may neutralise its effect. So take 15 minutes apart and enjoy the experience.
There are also many useful remedies for newborns too: I've used homeopathy to great effect to treat conditions like colic, not sleeping well, nappy rash, not keeping milk down and so on.
