By Lisa McNiven, Special to the Sherwood Park News Before I give you some ideas, I would like to say that there are many conditions which can affect your memory, such as thyroid problems, hormone imbalances, being inactive, having side effects to medications, genetics and nutrient deficiencies. Some herbs you may want to begin reading about include ginkgo biloba and ginseng; essential fatty acids (fish and omega oils); and aromatherapy oils such as rosemary, peppermint and basil. The aromatherapy oils can be put in air diffusers or added to carrier oils to make massage oils (research proper dilution). Homeopathic remedies are available as well, however a proper workup is required for a particular remedy by your homeopath or an naturopathic doctor who practices homeopathy. There are specialized supplements to aid in memory, however a proper assessment is required to evaluate the specific needs. Minerals are very important in one’s diet, so be sure to add lots of vegetables to your diet or take a multi-mineral supplement. Naturopathic doctors enable their patients to reach optimal health so that the imbalances do not cause memory problems. Try doing puzzles daily (such as crosswords), read more and exercise more, as this increases circulation to the brain. Be sure to take a good multi-vitamin, as these contain trace minerals required for many cellular tasks. Dr. Lisa McNiven, N.D., is an Alberta-licensed naturopath doctor based in Sherwood Park. She can be reached at info@healthworksnutrition.ca for column suggestions, comments and questions. Bhakti Paun Sharma
Different things can trigger an allergy — change in season, eating certain kinds of foods or exposure to certain things. The symptoms are usually observed when you are exposed to that particular substance or situation that is referred to as an allergen. Pollens, dust, dander, molds or food items like eggs, nuts, fish, mushroom are common allergens. As an alternative approach to treating these allergies so that the symptoms and effects reduce with time, homeopathy is found to be useful. We discussed the homeopathic approach to allergies, and the remedies prescribed, with Dr. Alok Palresha, MD Medicine (Hom.) and Acupuncturist. Here’s an extract of the discussion. Read: All you need to know about allergies. According to Dr. Palresha, the choice of remedy in Homeopathy is based on a holistic approach and revolves around the theory of individualisation. This approach helps a homeopath to treat all the signs and symptoms of the ailments and bring the individual to a state of complete wellness. In case of allergies, the treatment is not selected to get rid of the allergy, but to address the actual cause and the level of susceptibility of the individual. Types of allergies
Symptoms Itching, wheezing, cough, red eyes, eruptions and rashes, dryness in the skin, congestion or suffocation, nausea, swelling of lip or mouth are common symptoms. Note: ‘Highly diluted homeopathic remedies, taken under the supervision of trained professionals, are generally safe and unlikely to cause severe adverse reactions’, says the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). However, the organization warns – ‘Like any drug or dietary supplement, these products could pose risks if they are improperly manufactured (for example, if they are contaminated with microorganisms or incorrectly diluted)’. http://hpathy.com/homeopathy-papers/adrenal-fatigue/
