8 ON YOUR SIDE: Homeopathic remedies could impact your health & wallet

By: Colleen Seitz

TAMPA (WFLA) - It's a $3 billion a year industry. But how safe are homeopathic drugs and remedies?
The Food and Drug Administration is now taking input on a crackdown on homeopathic remedies but not everyone is happy about it.
Dr. Edward Kondrot runs the Healing Eye and Wellness Center in Zephyrhills. You'll find it after taking a few dirt roads into what feels like the middle of nowhere. But this remote clinic has patients flying in from all over the world because of Kondrot's approach.
Kondrot wears two hats: He's a board certified ophthalmologist, but also a doctor of homeopathy.
"I know sometimes you need surgery. Sometimes you do need to take traditional medication, but the majority of times we need to look at a more gentler approach to treat the person and by that, I mean understanding the cause." Kondrot explains homeopathy treats the person, not the disease.
He began studying homeopathy when he faced his own battle with adult onset asthma. Traditional asthma medication cause tremors which isn't going to work when you're an eye surgeon. That's what prompted him to look for an alternative care and he found it in homeopathy.
"I know it wasn't a placebo effect because the first remedy I took did very little for the asthma. It was the second remedy that cured my asthma."
Now Kondrot uses stem cells, light therapy and micro currents to treat eye problems.
"Close to 90 percent of people had an improvement of vision, which is shocking because these are people who have been told nothing can be done."
One of those patients is Wendy Littlepage who flies in from Colorado to be treated by Kondrot. Littlefield had a horrible reaction to the mainstream medication most doctors prescribe for glaucoma.
"One of the eye drops sent me to the emergency room and the other one gave me the worst headache of my life," she said.
Littlefield admits homeopathy isn't the answer for every medical problem.
"No, I wouldn't jeopardize my health and say, 'Oh, let me look up a remedy, I feel like I'm having a heart attack.' cause that's not prudent and any good homeopath would tell you to go to the emergency room." But she's a believer in Kondrot's homeopathic approach with her eye problems.
Dr. Drew Silverman is a skeptic. He says "natural doesn't mean safe."
Silverman is a doctor of pharmacy at Tampa General Hospital and his concern is that homeopathic remedies don't require FDA approval and, he says, that can sometimes be dangerous.
Take for example, complaints about Zicam, a nasal spray advertised as a cold remedy. "It was supposed to help relieve colds by spraying zinc in the nose, so what made the FDA look at this is there were 100-plus reports of people losing their sense of smell after using Zicam and never being able to get it back."
In 2016, the FDA warned parents against using a natural teething tablet containing bella donna. It's a toxic opiate derivative that has an unpredictable response in children under the age of 2. Silverman says, "Unregulated it can cause serious neurological side effects including seizures, which is what they found in these infants and children who were teething is they saw they were having seizures from this."
However, Kondrot believes, as a whole, homeopathic remedies are much safer than traditional medications. He says, "Are homeopathic remedies dangerous? Out of all the medical treatments that exist, homeopathy is by far the safest. There are over 100,000 deaths a year from traditional medication. A death from homeopathic remedies are unheard of."
Kondrot does concede a lack of oversight can be an issue.
"There are unscrupulous manufacturers and the concern now is foreign material coming into the U.S. that may not be under the same guidelines."
He also points out that "most of the homeopathic remedies manufactured in the United States are by certified homeopathic pharmacies."
And those remedies, for the most part, are much less expensive than traditional medications. But Kondrot says, "Unfortunately, it's not covered by insurance so some people will go for a $10,000 operation because it's covered by insurance, but they're not going to pay $10 for a homeopathic remedy because it's not covered by insurance."

CleverHomeopathy.wordpress.com - Homeopathy for Runny Nose

5/14/2018

Coryza is commonly referred to as a runny nose and is characterized by an acute inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nose. It frequently occurs concomitant to the ‘common cold’ and may be caused by a bacterial or viral infection, or may develop as an allergic reaction to diverse allergens such as dust, pollen and others.

The inflammation in the nasal cavity increases the secretion of mucous causing the typical symptom of the runny and congested nose. There may be nasal irritation, itching, burning, and sneezing. Oftentimes there is also some involvement of the eyes with redness, watering, swelling or itching. The inflammation may extend to the larynx, bronchi and throat, producing distinctive symptomatology there. Hence the patient may generally feel run down, may develop a cough, catarrh, frontal headache, lassitude and fatigue.

Some homeopathic remedies for coryza are:
Allium cepa: This coryza is characterized by a profuse watery, acrid discharge. Distinctive for this remedy is the worsening of the coryza in a warm room. This patient is better outside. There is an accompanying eye symptomatology in Allium cepa. The eyes are watery, smarting, and burning. There may be coughing and hoarseness.

Arsenicum album: The nasal cavity feels hot and burning. There is a watery discharge. The patient is thirsty and feels weak.

Belladonna: The nose feels obstructed and there is only light discharge. Everything feels dry and sore into the throat. There may be throbbing in the head and sensitivity to light. There may be a tickly cough. Thirst is increased.

Chamomilla: This remedy is indicated where there is heat of the head. One cheek is typically red, the other pale. The coryza is usually worse at night. The little patient is fretful, and calms down only if carried about.

Dulcamara: Constant sneezing with running nose and nasal congestion. Eyes are watering and swollen. May come on from becoming chilled after exertion. Symptoms are worse outside.

Gelsemium: There is a general sluggishness and chilliness. A dull headache and drowsiness are characteristic. The eyes are heavy; the eyeballs feel lame and sore.  There is watering of the eyes, sneezing and discharge from the nose. There is non-stop sneezing.

Euphrasia: The eyes are strongly affected with this remedy. There is a profuse, acrid watering from the eyes. The lids and face may become inflamed, excoriated, agglutinated. Lamplight causes photophobia. The discharge from the nose is profuse, bland, and fluent. There is sneezing, and worsening during the night and when lying down.

Eupatorium: With sneezing and headache there is aching in the bones, backache, chilliness and nausea.

Mercurious sol.: This remedy has some similarity with Arsenicum album. However symptoms are less severe and worse at night. The throat is sore there is much mucous salivation. There is aching and lameness in muscles and bones. There may be much sweating.

Rhus tox.: This is the remedy where getting wet brings on the coryza/ cold. The entire body may feel lame and may ache, especially the back and the eyelids.

Considering homeopathy as an option for children with ASD - The Chronicle Herald

SARAH TRASK

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a broad spectrum of complex conditions that affect a person’s ability to communicate, as well as interact with others. It most often develops during early childhood and early diagnosis is now taking place due to increased knowledge and awareness of the spectrum.
Children with ASD will often have accompanying physical and emotional challenges with feeding, sleep, attention and hyperactivity, seizures/epilepsy, fear and anxiety.
Developing countries the world over are experiencing a massive rise in the rates of ASD diagnosis. The CDC estimates autism’s prevalence as one in 68 children in the U.S., which has risen almost 120 per cent since the year 2000 (U.S. Centers for Disease Control, March 2014).
The book Impossible Cure by Amy L. Lansky, PhD, is a wonderful reference to the world of homeopathy and its use in autism, and provides parents, teachers and caregivers an introduction to homeopathy and how it is used in treatment. I have seen countless children in my own practice who have presented on different levels on the spectrum from high functioning to non-verbal.
Here is one case study of a sweet little boy whom I started treating not long after he was diagnosed with autism. Homeopathic treatment is not a “cure” nor is it fit for all children with ASD. This is simply a case example to illustrate a potential treatment option that can help a child become more connected to their environment and more connected within their own bodies.
The remedy and potency chosen was based on homeopathic principles and should not be used to treat other children with this diagnosis. A registered homeopath chooses the remedy, potency and prescription based on their unique symptom expression.

Case

A three-year-old boy was diagnosed with autism, gut dysbiosis and extreme constipation. Up until 18 months of age, he had reached all milestones and was in good health. First was sudden loss of eye contact, then lost verbal abilities, he stopped babbling and started making low moaning noises. Constipation followed. He had impacted bowels and constipation was very painful for him. He had a food allergy to eggs. He would have lots of perspiration on his back at night. He was highly sensitive to noises, new situations and new people. This would cause him much anxiety and, as a result, the boy would act out in outbursts of anger and crying.
Silica 30ch in water was given daily. Parents report: the first day with the new remedy the child had a large bowel movement. Within the first week, the child was noticeably calmer, especially in situations that would normally cause stress, such as noise and new people. Within three months, the child began making eye contact again and using words and language again. The constipation was an ongoing problem, but to a much lesser degree than before, where the child was able to evacuate more often and the use of laxatives was greatly lessened.
Within six months of treatment, the mother reported the child had said “I love you” to her and showed affection without prompting.
To date, the child (still a patient) is now older and coping well in school and social activities, and different remedies are chosen when this child has issues come up that do not relate to the initial prescription. Bowel function is excellent after four years.
If you have any questions about homeopathic medicine and its use for treatment in cases of ASD, please contact me for more information.

National Center for Homeopathy - Homeopathy for Heartburn

4/23/2018

Heartburn
Homeopathy offers a selection of remedies for the treatment of heartburn and acute acid reflux symptoms.
Heartburn is one of the most common complaints of pregnant women, perhaps because hormonal changes relax the esophagus, allowing acid to back up. Try cutting out spicy and greasy foods, and sleep with your head and shoulders elevated. Ginger tea can be helpful if you drink it before or during a meal, rather than when you actually have heartburn. One of these homeopathic remedies may also bring relief:
  • Arsenicum album: The individual may complain of burning pains felt in the stomach with food backing up into the esophagus. This is accompanied by burning pains all the way up to the throat. There may be severe, watery, burning, yellow diarrhea. Many of the symptoms will feel better while drinking hot drinks like tea, or by applying hot applications, like a heating pad. They may be thirsty for small, frequent sips of cold water, their mental state may be anxious, restless and fearful of being left alone.
  • Carbo vegetalis: Bitter, sour, rancid burping along with nausea and a very bloated abdomen are typical; burping gives you temporarily relief. You may feel worse after rich, high-fat food. You crave fresh air and want the windows open and fans turned on. You feel physically exhausted and mentally sluggish, but when you lie down the indigestion is worse. You tend to have cold hands and feet and varicose veins.
  • Nux vomica: The individual may complain of stomach pains of all types including burning, bloating, aching, constipation, nausea, belching and the feeling of stomach digest and acid backing up into the throat. Characteristics, which help determine this remedy, are a brusque temperament; similar to the overworked, high powered business man/woman who is very intense. He or she may be bossy and easy to anger. This individual often eats and drinks alcohol in excess. He/She desires coffee, spicy food, fatty foods and other stimulants. The person needing Nux vomica is inclined to overdo everything, all of which contribute to his acid reflux symptoms.
  • Phosphorus: The individual needing Phosphorus for heartburn will complain about burning pains felt in the abdomen, bloating and a feeling of fullness accompanied by great thirst for icy cold drinks, which are vomited back up shortly after becoming warm in the stomach. Belching and vomiting of undigested food are characteristic of the person needing phosphorus. The person is mild-mannered, and seeks company and affection.
  • Pulsatilla: The heartburn comes on at different times of the day and after eating various kinds of foods (especially rich, greasy ones). Burps have a sour, bitter taste. Stomach and abdomen feel empty (or sensation of a hole), with gurgling and rumbling in the evening, and pressing pains. You feel better in the fresh air. The individual's personality is sweet, gentle, whiny and tearful. They are afraid of being alone and desire sympathy.

Dr Nahida M Mulla.

Pica is a disorder characterized by an appetite for substances largely non-nutritive, e.g. metal, clay, coal, soil, faeces, chalk, paper, soap, ash, gum etc. or an abnormal appetite for some things that may be considered foods such as flour, raw rice, starch, ice cubes, salt. In order for these actions to be considered Pica, they must persist for more than one month at an age where eating such objects is considered developmentally inappropriate (above 18 to 24 months of age).
Pica is seen in all the ages particularly in pregnant women, small children and those with developmental disabilities and mental retardation.
Pica occurs throughout the world predominantly in people who live in poverty and people living in the tropics and in tribe oriented societies.
Pica in children, while common, can be dangerous. Children eating painted plaster containing lead may suffer brain damage from lead poisoning.

Homeopathy and Yellow Fever by s-scruttonco.uk

3/27/2018

YELLOW FEVER

YYellow fever is a viral infection transmitted by a bite from infected mosquitoes most commonly found in parts of South America and Africa. The WebMD website says that when transmitted to humans, the yellow fever virus can damage the liver and other internal organs and be potentially fatal. The World Health Organisation has estimated there are some  200,000 cases of yellow fever reported worldwide every year, resulting in 30,000 deaths. Indeed, Web MD state that yellow fever is increasing, internationally, "due to a decreased immunity to infection among local populations, deforestation, climate change, and high-density urbanization".

Conventional Medical Treatment for Yellow Fever
As usual, I have used the NHS Choices website as a guide to the conventional medical treatment of Yellow Fever. They can offer no treatment, but state that "there's a very effective vaccine that can stop you getting yellow fever if you're travelling to an area where the infection is found". The Web MD website confirms that there is no treatment.

"Because there is no cure for the viral infection itself, medical treatment of yellow fever focuses on easing symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, and dehydration."

Conventional medicine uses the Yellow Fever vaccine as a preventative. However, NHS Choices warns that it does have some minor side effects, such as a headache, muscle pain, a mild fever and soreness at the injection site. Unfortunately, this is not the whole truth. It states that babies under nine months of age, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people over the age of 60, people with weakened immune systems, and people who are allergic to any of the vaccines ingredients. such as an egg allergy, are not allowed to have the vaccine. That rules out a large proportion of the population from the only preventative measure conventional medicine has to offer, for a disease for which there is not treatment.

Indeed, the adverse reactions caused by the Yellow Fever vaccine are far more serious that admitted by NHS Choices, and they are outlined on the Drugs.Com website as follows:

          •     Confusion
          •     convulsions (seizures)
          •     coughing
          •     difficulty with breathing or swallowing
          •     fast heartbeat
          •     feeling of burning, crawling, or tingling of the skin
          •     nervousness or irritability
          •     reddening of the skin
          •     severe headache
          •     skin rash or itching
          •     sneezing
          •     stiff neck
          •     throbbing in the ears
          •     unusual tiredness or weakness
          •     vomiting
          •          Difficulty with moving
          •     joint pain
          •     low fever
          •     muscle aching or cramping
          •     muscle pains or stiffness
          •     swollen joints

So conventional medicine admits that it has no treatment, and its preventative vaccine comes with the prospect of a wide variety of serious and painful side effects.

Homeopathic Treatment of Yellow Fever
Homeopathy is a medical therapy that will avoid some of the side-effects and adverse reactions of conventional medical treatment. Homeopathy is the second most popular medical therapy in the world, and the most popular holistic system of medicine. Homeopathy is based on remedies made from a variety of different substances, all of which are known to cause symptoms of illness if taken in their normal form. However, homeopathy has discovered that substances that cause symptoms of illness can also cure those same symptoms of illness.

This is the principle of “Like cures Like” on which all homeopathy is based.

The task of the homeopath is to find a remedy whose symptom picture matches the symptoms of a person’s illness. These remedy symptom pictures have been developed over the last 220 years.

The selection of a homeopathic remedy is based on the individual’s symptoms of illness, not on any broad conventionally-defined illness. It is important to stress this. Homeopathy does not treat illness or diseases. Instead it treats an individual who has been diagnosed with a particular illness or disease. The distinction is important, and if you wish to read more about this, click on the chapter “Illness Diagnosis”.

As far as Yellow Fever is concerned, homeopathy has highlighted a number of remedies that have been found to be useful in its treatment.

PREVENTION
Susan Curtis, in her 'Handbook of Homeopathic Alternatives to Immunisations', says that homeopathic prophylaxis for Yellow Fever is the 'Yellow Fever' nosode (a remedy made from the virus), to be taken once a week whilst travelling in endemic regions, or one dose three times a week during an epidemic. This is available from homeopathic pharmacies for a fraction of the cost of the Yellow Fever vaccines.

TREATMENT
The Hpathy website has outlined some simple remedy pictures for a number of these remedies. All the remedies mentioned are safe, and any remedy that matches the patient’s symptoms will be effective. These simple remedy pictures give some indication of the types of symptoms they will treat.

Aconite
Nearly all homeopathic authorities praise this remedy in the early stage of yellow fever where there is high fever, chilliness and dry skin, bounding pulse and the characteristic mental accompaniments which are quite likely to be present in this disease. It will speedily calm the febrile storm in these conditions.

Gelsemium
Is a remedy for the onset when the patient is apathetic and dull, and Belladonna or Bryonia may also come in during the first stage. Very often, too, Camphora with its coldness and tendency to collapse may be the remedy. The vomiting of the first stage is often controlled by Ipecac.

Arsenicum
This remedy comes in most frequently in the second and third stages, and is one of the most important remedies in the disease. The patient has continued nausea and vomiting, and the vomited matter consist of bile or mucosities filled with blackish or sanguinolent streaks; the face is yellow and the pulse is small, weak and tremulous. There is much burning in the praecordial region and intense burning thirst, but, of course for small quantities of water only. No better remedy for these symptoms is to be found than Arsenicum. It sill often alone suffice to cure.

Lachesis
This remedy has given very satisfactory results in yellow fever, especially when vomiting is present, abdominal tenderness, brown tongue, delirium, slow speech, nausea, offensive discharges and black urine. It corresponds to nerve-poisoning and suits bad looking cases.

Sulphuric acid
Is a useful remedy for haemorrhages of black blood, profuse sweat with exhaustion, foetid stools and diminished secretion of urine.

Argentum nitricum
Is also one of the best remedies in the disease. It covers the vomiting; especially is it of use when the patient sinks and the vomiting become worse.

Phosphorous
Phosphorous with its haemorrhages; jaundice and other symptoms is a close simile to certain forms; it was successfully used in an epidemic occurring in Rio de Janerio.

Crotalus
This remedy produces a perfect picture of yellow fever, and it corresponds to the stage of black vomit and blood poisoning- there is a low delirium, yellow skin and oozing of blood from every orifice of the body, even bloody sweat is sometimes present. The yellow skin produced by this remedy is characteristic, and denotes blood poisoning rather than jaundice. Cadmium sulphate has also the symptoms of black vomit, and its study in the disease is suggested.

Carbo vegetabilis
This remedy has been considered as a preventive of yellow fever. Hering says this remedy more than any other drug corresponds in the totality of its action to yellow fever. It suits the third stage where collapse, coldness, extremely foetid discharge and great exhaustion of the vital forces are present.

Many of these remedies can be found in simple home-use remedy kits that can be obtained from these Homeopathic Pharmacies. However, for an accurate, individualised remedy selection, patients should consult with a qualified homeopath This increases the likelihood of matching an individual with a remedy that will work for them. A remedy that does not match the symptoms of an individual’s illness will not work, but equally will do no harm!

Scientific Evidence Supporting Homeopathy
There is a significant and growing amount of scientific evidence confirming that homeopathy is a safe and effective medical therapy. However, this evidence remains only the third most important proof of this.

The most important proof for the safety and effectiveness of homeopathy is clinical experience, that is the many millions of patients who, having suffered serious illness, have been treated successfully with homeopathy. This is going on throughout the world, and been doing so for over 200 years.

Homeopathy has also developed a voluminous materia medica. This contains the intricate details of the healing properties of several thousand substances used to make homeopathic remedies. The short remedy pictures above are just a tiny part of this knowledge.

I am not aware of any scientific testing of homeopathic treatment on Yellow Fever.

ADHD and Bach Flower Remedies By I Love Homeopathy

What is ADHDThe definition of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been updated in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) to more accurately characterise the experience of affected adults. This revision is based on nearly two decades of research showing that ADHD, although a disorder that begins in childhood, can continue through adulthood for some people. Previous editions of DSM did not provide appropriate guidance to clinicians in diagnosing adults with the condition. By adapting criteria for adults, DSM-5 aims to ensure that children with ADHD can continue to get care throughout their lives if needed.
ADHD is ccharacterisedby a pattern of behaviour, present in multiple settings (e.g., school and home), that can result in performance issues in social, educational, or work settings. As in DSM-IV, symptoms will be divided into two categories of inattention and hyperactivity and impulsivity that include behaviours like failure to pay close attention to details, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, excessive talking, fidgeting, or an inability to remain seated in appropriate situations.
What are Bach Flower RemediesDr Edward Bach was a qualified allopathic physician. Later he got his degree in homoeopathy. He discovered 38 Bach flower remedies. Bach remedies are prescribed on basis of mental state of the patient it does not mean that this treatment is confined to the mental cases only. It simply means that the patient is cured physically and mentally by the remedy which is prescribed on the basis of mental symptoms only. ADHD is the disorder which shows the spectrum of signs & symptoms in both mental and physical plane hence Bach flower remedies are helpful in treating this condition.

This is the remedy prepared by boiling the young twigs with shoots. This remedy has a lack of sufficient interest in present circumstances. Chestnut Bud relates to a state of a flighty mind, inattention, and a soul not yet grounded in maturity. Learning experiences of either a factual or moral kind are not integrated into the consciousness to the person’s full benefit. Chestnut bud child is restless and impulsivThe child lacks the power of concentration because of mental hurriedness or precipitation of thoughts. Chestnut child exhibits childish and foolish behaviour which we can relate to the remedies like Bufo, Baryta carb etc. These children are reckless, careless, they lack the power of reasoning. Chestnut bud has general weakness of memory, failure to retain learned material, this being either of factual or moral content. Chestnut bud also has naiveness, immaturity of mind/emotions, developmental delay. Children’s are hyperactive and impulsive they may show impulsive movements; lack of serenity and focused gaze. Chestnut bud is also helpful in kids who have symptoms like disobedience, commit anti-social acts, sins, crimes, again and again, factitious disorders and malingering.Chestnut BudChestnut Bud has general weakness of memory, failure to retain learned material, this being either of factual or moral content. Getting a Good Night’s Sleep By Homeopathy Plus!

Sleep is important. It helps our body recover from the day’s activities and enhances memory and brain function. Without it, we would literally go crazy.
Sleep should be a natural part of life but for some, it doesn’t come easily. The reasons are many and varied: some prescribed medications interfere with the body’s wake/sleep cycle, emotional stresses lead to night-time anxiety, and the wrong food before bed will disturb sleep. Sometimes there is no obvious reason.
To help you get a good night’s sleep, we have compiled a list of helpful tips and outlined the common symptoms of some homeopathic remedies that treat insomnia. The remedy you need may be among them.

Tips for a Good Night’s Sleep1. Keep Healthy
  • Exercise regularly. Exercising for at least thirty minutes each day will help you fall asleep at night. Just make sure you don’t do it too close to bedtime or the reverse will be true.
  • Lose weight. Being overweight increases the risk of snoring and sleep apnoea, neither of which result in a good night’s sleep.
  • Have a health check. Many diseases interfere with sleep. For example, thirst through the night may indicate diabetes, burning feet can point to small blood vessel or nerve disease, and frequent visits to the bathroom could signal a prostate, kidney, or heart problem.
  • Balance menopausal hormones. Hormonal changes at menopause can cause hot flushes, joint pain, and palpitations that interfere with sleep. Bring you body back into balance with the help of your local homeopath or natural therapist.
2. The Food Factor
  • Avoid caffeine. Drinking coffee, or even tea, will stop some people falling asleep. Be aware that caffeine is also in some processed foods, drinks, and even medications such as diet pills.
  • Avoid foods which irritate. Dairy and wheat products are high on the list of foods that cause sleep-disturbing problems such as gastrointestinal upsets, congestion, gas, and apnoea in sensitive people.
  • Eat a protein snack a few hours before bed. L-tryptophan from protein foods will help your body produce the sleep-promoting neuro-transmitters of melatonin and serotonin. Carbohydrates such as a small piece of wholemeal bread may also help tryptophan cross the blood-brain barrier.
  • Avoid fluids two hours before bed. This will reduce the likelihood of waking to go to the bathroom. Empty your bladder before going to bed.
  • Avoid snacks, especially sugars and processed grains, before bed. These foods cause rapid spikes and drops in blood sugar levels that disturb sleep.
  • Avoid alcohol. The drowsiness produced by alcohol is short-lived and stops you entering the deeper and more restful stages of sleep. As its effect wears off some hours later, you are also more likely to wake and then be unable to go back to sleep.
  • Sip chamomile tea before going to bed. Chamomile tea has a mild homeopathic effect of relieving anxiety and inducing relaxation – just the thing for a good night’s sleep.
3. Prepare the Bedroom
  • Make your bedroom an attractive place to sleep. Don’t dump work, chores, or junk on or around your bed. You will sleep much better in a relaxed and uncluttered environment.
  • Check your bedroom for electro-magnetic fields (EMFs) and remove electrical devices. These can disrupt the pineal gland and the production of melatonin and serotonin that lead to sleep. If you are especially sensitive to EMFs try switching the circuit breakers off at night, cutting the power in your home.
  • Maintain a moderate temperature. The recommended temperature for sleep is no more than 21 degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit). A warmer temperature can disturb sleep.
  • Darkness will help. Even small amounts of light can disrupt your body’s production of the neuro-transmitters needed for sleep. Reduce the light in your room by black-out curtains and avoid sudden exposures to bright light if getting up at night, as these can stop you body’s production of melatonin.
  • Change the noise. Gentle music, white noise or relaxation CDs can help you relax and unwind. Sounds of the ocean can be particularly soothing for sleep.
  • No TV before bed. Stop watching TV well before you go to sleep and certainly do not watch it in the bedroom. An exciting program will over-stimulate your brain, and make it harder to fall asleep.
  • Add a little fragrance. The essential oil of lavender soothes and relaxes. Sprinkle a few drops around your bedroom before going to bed.
  • Keep your bed for sleeping. Bed should be reserved only for sleep, or that other pleasurable activity. If you are used to watching TV or doing work in bed, your brain will associate it with these activities rather than sleep, making it harder to relax when you turn off the light.
4. Night-time Ritual
  • Pack up your work at least an hour or more before going to bed. This will let your mind relax so you will more easily go to sleep. Write the following day’s ‘to do’ list before finishing work to stop your mind compiling lists as you try to go to sleep.
  • Start a relaxing routine. This could consist of a warm bath, massage, aromatherapy or listening to a calming CD – anything that relaxes you. Repeat this routine each night and your body will soon associate it with going to sleep.
  • Go to bed at the same time each night. And get up at the same time each morning, too, even on weekends. Your body clock will synchronise with these times making it easier to go to sleep as well as wake up in the morning.
  • Take a hot bath or shower before bed. This will increase the temperature of your body. The fall in temperature as it returns to normal will encourage relaxation and help with sleep.
  • Write it down and get it out. If your mind races when you try to sleep, writing you thoughts, plans and worries in a book can be a useful way of calming and emptying your mind.
  • Read something relaxing. Slightly boring material is best as stimulating material such as mysteries or suspense novels will only wake you up further.
  • Go to bed early. It is often said that every of hour of sleep before midnight is worth two after it, and there is truth in that saying. Our bodies do most of their detoxing before the early hours of the morning, something that is hindered if we go to bed too late.
  • Use the homeopathic effect of coffee. In homeopathy’s ‘like treats like’ approach, coffee will paradoxically help some people sleep better as it will calm their busy mind and body if drunk before going to bed.  This approach only works if your symptoms of insomnia are very similar to those of having had too much coffee. Coffee can also be taken in homeopathic potencies – read all about it under the name of Coffea Cruda in the ‘Treat Your Insomnia with Homeopathy’ section.
5. Once in Bed
  • Warm your feet with socks. Feet often have the poorest circulation of your body.  Wearing socks will stop them becoming cold and disturbing your sleep at night.
  • Wear an eye mask to block out light. As already mentioned, blocking out as much light as possible will help you sleep. An eye-mask is an easy way to do this, especially if it’s impossible to have your room in complete darkness.
  • Stop the noise. Ear plugs will block or muffle sounds if you are a light sleeper or if you have to sleep in a noisy environment
  • Face your alarm clock away from you. Watching the hours tick by as you try to sleep will only increase your stress and make it harder to drift off.
Treat Your Insomnia with HomeopathyHomeopathy has a marvellous history of treating insomnia, often making some of the more stringent suggestions in the ‘Tips for a Good Night’s Sleep’ section unnecessary. If insomnia is the only symptom you have, one of the following remedies may bring relief.
Just take one pill, or 5 drops, an hour or two before going to bed and let the remedy do its work. Once you are sleeping well, don’t continue to take it each night as each remedy will cause insomnia if taken in excess. You only need another dose should the insomnia return.
Symptoms usually do not exist in isolation, though. If insomnia is just one of your problems, or if it is not fully relieved by the remedy that seems to match your sleeplessness, make an appointment to see a professional homeopath who will take a detailed case-history to find a constitutional remedy to treat not only your insomnia, but the other health problems that bother you as well.

Carpenters, for example, are prone to whacking their thumbs with hammers or taking a blow from beams of wood. They could certainly do with a bottle of Arnica montana (Arn.) in their first aid kit as its ability to treat bruising and soft tissue damage is legendary.
Chefs would also be wise to keep some homeopathic Cantharis (Canth.) on hand to reduce the pain and blistering of burns while typists, prone to repetitive strain problems, would benefit from a dose or two of Ruta graveolens (Ruta.) which is a leading remedy for tendon strain.
But it’s not just these occupations that have a need for homeopathy. Let’s match some more remedies to other types of work to see how homeopathy can help.
